Setting a New Course in Maritime and Transport
Situation
As a port operation leader in North America, the Client set proposed a sustainable, phased, and privately funded port expansion project with the goal of delivering required capacity solutions against supply chain disruptions while minimizing local environmental and social impacts.
For the proposed large-scale project shoring to large populations required strong Indigenous support. This approach was viewed as a risk management tool, a meaningful way of implementing UNDRIP legislation, and a considerable value-add. Recognizing this, the Client looked to strengthen relations with impacted First Nations to create lasting partnerships and alignment with environmental and economic goals.
Solutions
Supporting the proponent in establishing effective and regular communication to negotiate staged agreements and build upon existing relations with First Nations. Additional capacity in the environmental assessment process was provided to overcome project barriers and establish opportunities that further encouraged First Nation participation. This was more than just consultation; it was about creating spaces for trust, participation, and shared visions of the future.
Outcomes
- Successful ratification of capacity and framework agreements.
- Elevated design and promotion of Indigenous Procurement Policy.
- Over 10 new employment and scholarship opportunities fulfilled.
- Creation of organization Indigenous Brand Guide.
