Leveraging Integrated Corporate Affairs to Reopen a Mine

Situation

As the five-year anniversary of a significant mine incident and its associated legal findings approached, the Client had yet to publicly address the widely publicized environmental event. Over these years, the mine had invested tens of millions of dollars and collaborated closely with local First Nations partners to remediate the site. Additionally, the Client had dedicated extensive efforts to on-site restoration to re-open the mine, aiming to supply Canada’s economy with critical minerals and create well-paying jobs.

Due to the Client’s reticent approach and the current media landscape in Canada, non-factual information had come to dominate the narrative surrounding the incident. This misinformation had also influenced many government decision-makers. The Client now sought to share its story about the incident: highlighting the strength of its First Nations partnerships, showcasing world-class remediation efforts, and reaffirming its commitment to rebuilding the mine to support local employment and supply critical minerals.

Role
Integrated Corporate Affairs

  • Indigenous Relations – strengthened the relationship with key First Nations and acted as lead negotiator for renewed agreements.
  • Government Relations – designed strategy and execution of subsidiary government relations efforts related to mine re-opening and environmental permitting processes.
  • Community Relations – re-established relationship with local municipality who supported the mine’s efforts and contributions to the local economy.
